HAPPY 2025, FRIENDS!
Wow, the New Year has started off with a BANG! This month has been a whirlwind of Onyx Storm, where we talked to Empyrean Graphic Audio voice actors (you’re amazing, Khaya and Gabriel!), hosted Empyrean-themed events with our FanClub, partnered with Barnes & Noble for the midnight release party where so many wonderful people came to see us (our cheeks are still sore from smiling so much), had the time of our life binge-reading the book in a hotel room over 24 hours, recorded our reactions episode, prepped Episode 1 of the deep dive, and announced that we are interviewing Rebecca Yarros this Sunday! (Plus another author announcement when you scroll down!)
There’s SO much happening here at Fantasy Fangirls – and thanks to you, this podcast has climbed the Top Charts these past few weeks (at #37 today on Spotify!)
We understand some of you are wondering whether Rebecca’s Denver event will be recorded and/or livestreamed. Because we are not the ones putting on this event and want to be respectful to those who are, the most we can promise is what we’ve seen from other tour stops: Lots of video clips to post. We never want to overpromise and underdeliver, especially when logistics are out of our control.
As always, thank you so much for being part of this growing community. We are so grateful for everyone on this wild ride with us and all the new faces here (there’s a lot of you – hii!!!). We are unbelievably excited for everything February has in store, Onyx Storm deep dive and Romantasy BookCon, here we come

What we’re up to…
LEXI….Reading: Onyx Storm reread for the deep dive and getting back into Legendborn that I started earlier this month! Theorizing: Everything Onyx Storm! But I won’t go into more detail here because, spoilers. Listening to: Besides Audible audiobooks? Taylor Swift as I read or Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd in the car with my kids. They love that guitar solo! Watching: Jake and I are rewatching all the Star Wars movies in chronological order. We’re about to start Revenge of the Sith Looking forward to: The start of this Onyx Storm deep dive and, of course, INTERVIEWING REBECCA THIS WEEKEND! Dreams really do come true. | NICOLE….Reading: Unsurprisingly, Onyx Storm on repeat over and over! (Specifically on audio!) Theorizing: About 45,000,000 things from Onyx Storm… Seriously, my Reddit history is almost laughable. Listening to: The beginning of the Onyx Storm scene by scene playlist! I’m still putting the final touches on it but I promise it will be out soon! Watching: To decompress from the craziness that is Empyrean FFG land, Brett and I have been watching a lot of Joshua Wiseman cooking videos! He is one of my favorite YouTubers and I’ve loved his stuff for years! Looking forward to: THIS WEEKEND! Rebecca Yarros is finishing her tour here in Denver and Lexi and I cannot wait to see her! |

Not including Onyx Storm on repeat, these are the books we are currently reading for fun!
Lexi  LegendbornBy Tracy Deonn Why Lexi recommends it: While I’m only a third of the way through it, this story is so intriguing and I absolutely love the depth of the characters, the mystery around the magic, and the important societal themes woven into the narrative. I picked it up after Lauren of Book Huddle and Khaya Fraites from Graphic Audio highly recommended it, and I can’t wait to keep reading/listening! It’s also a great audiobook! About: After her mother's death, 16-year-old Bree Matthews discovers a secret society at UNC-Chapel Hill. She uncovers hidden magic, deep-rooted racism, and her own powerful ancestral legacy while seeking the truth. | Nicole  The Things We Leave UnfinishedBy Rebecca Yarros Why Nicole recommends it: I just finished this prior to Onyx Storm coming out because I needed something not fantasy (my brain was stuffed full with Empyrean lore) and WOW, this book was lovely! Theres two story lines that, as the book goes on you start to piece them together. Plus the ending twist was CHEFS KISS! Also a GREAT audiobook to use your one month free Audible credit on! About: After a brutal divorce, Georgia returns to her late great-grandmother’s estate—only to clash with bestselling author Noah, who’s set to finish Scarlett Stanton’s final novel where they uncover Scarlett’s WWII love story. | Sanity Manager Hayden  The Emperor’s SoulBy Brandon Sanderson Why Hayden recommends it: A lot of folks (including myself) are intimidated by how long most of Sanderson’s novels are. The Emperor’s Soul is a perfect way for readers to give Sanderson a try without committing to a 600+ page book! Clocking in at 176 pages, The Emperor’s Soul somehow packs expert world building, magic systems and character development into a bite-sized package. About: Caught forging the Moon Scepter, Shai must restore the Emperor’s soul in 100 days or face execution. If he doesn’t awaken, the Heritage Faction will lose power, and the empire will collapse into chaos. |
